How it is made
Each bowl begins as a small ball of fine Australian mid fire porcelain clay, worked entirely by hand using the pinch pot method. Little thumb impressions are used as a texture to allow the eventual glaze to pool in each indentation.
The artist’s own turquoise crackle glaze is applied by hand and the bowl fired at a mid fire temperature to deepen the colour and create the tension between the clay and glaze for a crackle finish. Where the glaze pools into the natural curves and hollows of the form, the tones shift from soft sage green into turquoise then deeper teal, following the contours of the hand-formed surface.
The result is a one of a kind sculptural piece. The size is a small bowl, beautiful to admire on a shelf or to house small objects or jewellery. Its also perfect for housing a tea light candle with wide sides to contain the flame.
What is a crackle glaze?
A crackle glaze develops its distinctive network of fine lines during the cooling phase of firing, as the glaze contracts at a slightly different rate to the clay body beneath it. The result is a surface that appears to hold its own map of fine cracks, each one unique to that specific firing. It is a naturally occurring effect rather than a manufactured pattern, which means every piece carries its own unrepeatable surface.
Dimensions
Approximately 6.5cm high by 10cm wide (widest point). Note this is a structural piece, and hand pinched, so is not perfectly symmetrical like a thrown bowl.
Materials
- Fine Australian mid fire porcelain clay, hand-pinched
- Artist’s own turquoise crackle glaze, hand-applied and fired twice
- No two pieces identical
A note on handmade
Because each bowl is formed entirely by hand from raw clay, natural variation in shape, wall thickness, glaze tone, and crackle pattern will occur between pieces. This is not a flaw. It is what makes each piece genuinely one of a kind.
