How they’re made
Each earring is shaped by hand from fine Australian porcelain clay — a more delicate and refined material than standard ceramic clay, valued for its smooth surface, white colour, and the way finer areas become translucent once fired. The organic form of each piece is inspired by the natural variation in the body of a jellyfish.
The clay is first prepared with a hand stamped ‘jelly’ texture, then cut and refined into their jelly shape. After a first firing, the front of each earring is glazed by hand in an opalescent white glaze that has a soft, pearlescent quality — catching the light differently depending on the angle. The piece is then fired again to lock in the finish and strengthen the porcelain.
The reverse of each earring is deliberately left unglazed, exposing the natural white porcelain clay body and the subtle texture of the hand-formed surface — a special detail that makes these earrings feel considered from every angle.
The 14k gold filled mini hoops are hand-shaped and polished in the studio, sized to complement the porcelain jewel without overpowering it.
Why porcelain?
Porcelain is a fine, ceramic clay known for its whiteness, smoothness, and — when worked thinly — a beautiful natural translucency. It’s a more demanding material to work with than standard clay, requiring more care in forming and firing, but the results have a refinement and lightness that other clays can’t replicate. In light, fine porcelain almost seems to glow.

A note on handmade: Because each earring is shaped entirely by hand from a fluid, organic form, natural variation in shape, size, and glaze tone will occur between pairs. This is intentional — it reflects the jellyfish inspiration, where no two are ever quite the same.
FAQ’s
Q: What makes these earrings translucent? The translucency comes from the porcelain itself. Fine porcelain clay, when formed thinly and fired at high temperature, has a natural quality that allows light to pass through it slightly — giving it a soft, luminous appearance that other ceramic materials don’t have. It’s one of the things that makes porcelain special as a material for fine jewellery.
Q: What are these earrings made from? Each earring is hand-formed from fine Australian porcelain clay, glazed in an opalescent white glaze on the front, and hung on hand-shaped 14k gold filled mini hoops. The reverse is left unglazed to show the natural white porcelain. The porcelain is fired twice for strength.
Q: How big are the Jelly White Porcelain Earrings? They drop approximately 2.7 cm from top to bottom and measure approximately 1.7 cm at their widest point. They’re a compact, refined size — detailed enough to be noticed, light enough to wear all day without discomfort.
Q: Are the hoops real gold? The hoops are 14k gold filled, not solid gold or gold plated. Gold filled is a high-quality, durable finish that contains significantly more gold than standard plating — it’s long-lasting and a good choice for people with sensitivity to base metals.
Q: What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic? All porcelain is ceramic, but not all ceramic is porcelain. Porcelain is made from a finer, more refined clay, resulting in a denser, smoother, whiter material. It’s more delicate to work with but produces a lighter, more refined finish — and in thin sections, a natural translucency that standard ceramic clays don’t have.
Q: Are these suitable as a gift? Yes — they arrive in a handmade reusable cotton pouch, complete with care instructions. The combination of the nature-inspired design, fine porcelain, and gold hoops makes these a distinctive and thoughtful gift for birthdays, Mother’s Day, or any occasion.
