How they’re made
These earrings are one of the more technically layered pieces in the Meraki Fire studio — involving two different clays, a hand-carved stamp, and a two-tone glaze approach that requires careful application to achieve the right contrast.
The upper ceramic piece is formed from a fine black Australian clay; the lower, longer piece from a sandy, flecked Australian clay that gives the underside a natural, organic texture reminiscent of beach sand. Each piece is hand-shaped individually before a palm motif is pressed in using a custom clay stamp – hand carved using a sgraffito technique.
The sterling silver hooks are made from recycled silver, hammered at the front for a gentle texture, and finished with silicone backs to keep the earrings secure during wear.
What is a sgraffito stamp?
Sgraffito is a traditional ceramic technique where design is carved directly into clay or glaze. In this case, the technique has been used to hand-carve a free hand palm tree stamp — allowing it to be reused to create small batch collections. Because the stamp itself is handmade and each impression is applied by hand, subtle variation occurs naturally between pairs, making every set genuinely unique.

A note on one-of-a-kind: Because the palm stamp is applied by hand and each pair is formed individually, no two pairs will be identical. The placement of the palm motif, the glaze tones, and the proportions of each piece will carry their own subtle variation — the mark of something genuinely handmade rather than mass produced.
